ABOUT FAMILY PROMISE & MLUC
Volunteers live our MLUC mission through this service to families experiencing homelessness in Montgomery County.
Main Line Unitarian Church is a longtime supporter of Family Promise of the Main Line, a non-profit organization with the mission to help “families experiencing homelessness and low-income families achieve sustainable independence through a community-based response.”
Robert Batt and Amy Kokas coordinate the Family Promise program at MLUC and can answer questions about volunteer roles and to match you with a veteran volunteer to start out.
HOW IT WORKS
Family Promise provides families experiencing homelessness in Montgomery County social work support so that they can find affordable housing, jobs, training, and other support to return to self-sufficiency. Thanks to the interfaith network of churches and synagogues of which MLUC is a part, the families have a place to stay and food to eat while they are regaining their self-sufficiency and while their children continue to go to school.
During our hosting weeks, families arrive each evening at dinner time. Church members and their families make and serve dinners, spend time in the early evening with our visitors, or stay overnight at the church to be available in case of an emergency. Other volunteers serve as meal coordinator or shopper, and/or help with set-up, clean-up, or laundry. A volunteer typically contributes one two-hour shift or one overnight shift during a hosting week.
With the unprecedented rise in housing costs coming on the heels of the pandemic, the services provided by Family Promise are critical.
