Relentless: On Love, Life, and Learning to Rest
Life is relentless.
Work. Eat. Feed kids. Call family. Walk the dog. See friends. Fix the car. Clean the toilet. Good times. Hard times. And more and forever.
The news cycle is relentless.
There is something new every day right now, something that upsets, shocks, scares. There are also glimpses of action and even hope.
Love is also relentless.
Our faith calls us to put love at the center. Are we doing these life tasks out of love? With love? For ourselves, our closest family and friends, for those we work with, for those we encounter in our daily activities? Are we speaking out for justice, equity, transformation, pluralism, interdependence, and generosity? Are we doing justice, being fair, seeking transformation, valuing pluralism, building our interdependence, and sharing what we have?
There is a Love that does not rest.
We cannot actually be relentless. We need to turn away from bad things sometimes and turn our brains off. We have to sleep. We have to eat. We have to be silly with the children, we have to let ourselves forget. But we need to remember also that there is more love somewhere. Our personal ability to love is not all the love there is. There are other people who sing while we breathe, other groups who resist when we rest. We can lean into this Love that does not have to rest, trust in it, let go of the weight of the world in our muscles and bones.
May it be so.
